These residencies give students an Arts Integration experience of an art form connecting to a curricular concept’ like Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts. Residencies are available to all grade levels from K-12. Art forms available are Music, Theatre/Drama, Puppetry, and Visual Arts. In school or after school Residencies last 6 to 8 days for a period of 45 to 60 minutes in the classroom.

Meet the Artists

Music

Tune Into History: Creating Historical multimedia Mashups: Louis Cardenas

 Grades: 4th -12th

Music has a powerful way of instantly communicating a time, place, mood, and even events. Imagine that power combined with learning history!  In this residency, students will explore historical events through music and audio recordings of speeches and combine them into musical mashups to demonstrate their understanding of the historical era.  This innovative residency is led by Louis Cardenas, a DJ and the founder of the AM Project, a digital arts & music non-profit.

Theatre

Making It Real: Retelling Historical Events Through Drama: Ruthie Buescher

Grades: 9th- 12th

There is a reason the Broadway show “Hamilton” and Netflix series “The Crown” are so popular. Drama makes history relevant, exciting, and alive! In this residency, students will write and perform “binge-worthy” scenes that demonstrate their understanding of a historical event from your curriculum. Join theater maker Ruthie Buescher as she helps students deepen their comprehension of the past while also finding their own place in history!

Using the 3 C’s: Cooperation, collaboration & creativity to enhance comprehension and compassion: Tammy Frazier

Grades: 3-5

CREATING THE COLLECTIVE CLASSROOM is a social, emotional learning residency focused on EMPATHY and the 3 C’s:  COOPERATION, COLLABORATION & CREATIVITY.  The goal of the residency is to help students gain an understanding of empathy through drama.

Visual Arts

Feeling Geometry: A Study of Shapes and the Creation of Abstract Art: Barbara Hand

Grades: 1st-3rd

Engaging abstract art images, sharpened observations, and a solid grasp of basic geometry puts real-life math and abstract art interpretation within every child’s reach.  In this residency, students explore abstract artwork by Wassily Kandinsky, learn the basic geometry and art elements used to create it, and combine those understandings to create their own emotionally charged abstract pieces.  Join visual artist and experienced elementary educator, Barbara Hand, as she guides students to become emotionally expressive mathematical artists.

A Visual Tour Around the World: Misty Mendoza

Grades: 6

In today's technology driven world sightseeing is as easy as a mouse click, but diving deeper into understanding cultures and history takes a bit more effort. In this residency, students dive deeper to create an app that communicates an understanding of cultural and historical sites of a chosen city while also learning design principles and new technology tools. Misty Mendoza, a teacher with 10 years of experience teaching digital arts and other technology courses, leads students on a tour across the world to get lost in a multicultural experience with the hope of finding a little more about themselves.

Puppetry

Puppetry, Personality & Pathos: Connecting To Emotions: Katrin Ludwig

Grades: 3rd – 5th

Engaging and sometimes disarming, puppetry can create the space for expressing emotion through “an other”.  With character exploration as the framework, puppets become the tools that help students communicate safely and authentically. In the residency, puppets are created and brought to life, building confidence-demonstrating students' understanding of connections between emotions, characters, and situations. Trained in creative drama and puppetry, Katrin has 10+ years co-creating residencies with teachers.   She works to incorporate students’ ideas promoting imagination, improvisation, and insight.
